What is a Months Calculator?
A Months Calculator is a date tool that calculates the number of complete calendar months between two dates. It can also show the difference as years, months, and remaining days, which is useful when a simple month count does not provide enough detail.
Calculating months is different from dividing the number of days by 30 because calendar months do not have a fixed length.

How Does the Months Calculator Work?
The calculation starts by comparing the year and month components of the two dates.

- End date = Y2, M2, D2
the initial difference in months is:
The day-of-month must then be considered. If the ending day has not yet reached the starting day, the final calendar month is incomplete.
The remaining days are calculated using the actual number of days in the relevant calendar month.

How to use Months Calculator?
Using the Months Calculator takes only a few steps:
- Enter the Start date. Choose one end of the period you want to measure.
- Enter the End date. Choose the other date, such as a deadline, expiry date, anniversary, or future event.

The exact number of days in these periods is not fixed. A month can contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, and a year can contain 365 or 366 days.
Months Calculator FAQ
Is one month always 30 days?
No. A calendar month can contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. Using 30 days per month is only an approximation. The Months Calculator uses calendar dates instead of assuming that every month has the same duration.
Does the order of the dates matter?
No. The calculator determines which date is earlier and calculates the interval between the earlier and later date.
Why does January 31 to February 28 show 0 full months?
A full month is counted only when the required calendar-month boundary has been completed. February does not contain a 31st day, so January 31 to February 28 is treated as 0 full months and 28 days by this calculation method.
What is the difference between Total months and Months in the breakdown?
Total months includes all complete years converted into months.
For example:

In the detailed breakdown, the Months field shows only the months remaining after complete years have been separated. In this example, it would show:

Does the calculator handle leap years?
Yes. Calendar calculations account for February having 29 days in a leap year, so the total number of days between two dates reflects leap days when they occur within the selected period.
Can I use the calculator for contracts, leases, or subscriptions?
Yes. You can enter the relevant start and end dates to find the calendar duration in months, years, and days.
